Anyone who has been involved in cub scouts probably has made their own pinewood derby car and knows the excitement of racing something they have built. For those who don’t know what a Pinewood Derby Race is, it’s a race usually hosted by a Cub Scout Pack, in which participants make homemade pinewood race cars from a kit. Cars can be as fancy or as plain as desired and strict weight restrictions mean that weights need to be wisely distributed to help make the car faster. Each car is propelled by gravity down a steep metal race track, racing three others at a time. The first car to reach the electronic finish line at the bottom of the track is the winner for that heat. It all starts with a block of wood, four wheels and four nails. It’s a wonderful learning experience and there is a lot of science behind making a fast derby car and it’s not as easy as it seams. Derby cars can be as simple as just using the block shape from the kit and painting it to look like a school bus or van. Some derby cars are made to look like classic cars, hot rods, trucks or intricately carved. It’s up to your imagination of what the car will look like. Pinewood derby racing is unpredictable and that is why it is so fun! PLEASE MAKE SURE TO READ THE FOLLOWING RULES AND REGULATIONS BEFORE BUILDING YOUR PINEWOOD DERBY CAR OR ENTERING AN DERBY CAR. |
